This project implemented the long-term vision to provide comprehensive amenities at the 72-acre Woodland Creek Community Park. The park is home to the Lacey Community Center, the Lacey Senior Center, and the “White House,” which regularly host events and programs. Longs Pond with its youth fishing pier and the restored Woodland Creek define the project area. Drawing on the park’s rich context, Nakano Associates interwove the desired uses and ecological preservation objectives to support intergenerational community recreation and environmental stewardship in the park.
The park design added restrooms, picnic shelters, children’s play areas, site furnishings, parking, and pedestrian walking trails. Open expanses of meadow offer informal field play and space for passive activities. To address the protection of the water bodies, a low-impact drainage design allows for sheet-flow drainage in many areas, keeping water to infiltrate into the ground before reaching the nearby creek. The site also utilizes existing stormwater detention areas to capture the larger north parking lot surface water runoff.
