The City of Lynnwood has been selected to be the future home a new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, which serves to honor the families of servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the US military. Nakano Associates was chosen to lead the development of this project through bid documents in a matter of months to reach the goal of grand opening by Veterans Day 2022.
The proposed design seamlessly incorporates the new Gold Star Family Memorial into the existing park with the addition of ADA accessibility improvements, a memorial wall, additional seating, expanded plaza and planting renovation. In addition to honoring families who’ve lost loved ones in combat, 22 sculptural seats flanking the monument honor those families who have lost loved ones to the lasting trauma of combat after returning home. These ‘families’ of seats with one absent reflects the long held tradition of keeping an empty chair during meal times at the table of families who’ve lost a loved one.
