Nakano Associates developed a schematic design for two alleys in Seattle’s International District Chinatown: Canton Alley and Maynard Alley. The purpose of the project was to find ways to make the alleys safer and more attractive as pedestrian spaces and connections within Chinatown.
Programming and activities are paramount to creating a place for people. The Nakano Associates design team helped the Seattle Chinatown International District Planning and Development Authority (SCIDpda) carry that discussion forward with the community. Through an initial public workshop, input was gathered from stakeholders regarding the kinds of activities that could take place in the alleys and would serve the needs of the community.
Following the planning phase, a design palette of physical improvements was developed to support the desired uses. These improvements include new paving, opening new windows and doors onto the alley, improving lighting, adding landscape where possible, and finding ways to incorporate art.
