Madison Valley Stormwater Project Receives Honorable Mention

The Madison Valley Stormwater Project Phase II will be recognized with an Honorable Mention at the upcoming Seattle Design Commission’s Design Excellence Awards. This project, completed in 2013, is one of seven to be recognized at the event, chosen out of all of the public buildings, parks, open spaces, and vision plans completed in Seattle in the last two years.
This long-term solution for stormwater storage in the Madison Valley neighborhood consists of a 1.3-million-gallon stormwater storage tank in Washington Park and flood control improvements in the surrounding neighborhood. Working with the engineering firm MWH Americas, Nakano Associates designed an overlook on top of the storage tank to double its function as public infrastructure, and transformed the site into a useable park. In addition, the native planting on the valley’s steep slopes reestablish a native forest ecosystem and an art installation is thoughtfully integrated with the ecological objectives.
The Seattle Design Commission honors projects that “exemplify the values of the Design Commission: inspired design, contextual integration, innovative sustainability, social inclusion, exemplary partnerships, effective investment, and impeccable execution.” Learn more on their website.
The Madison Valley Stormwater Project is open to the public and accessible from the Washington Park Playfield at 2500 Lake Washington Blvd E in Seattle. The plaza and main path are ADA accessible.
